A practical NSBDE and OSHA readiness guide for Nevada dental practices
The short answer: The Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners is reviewing historical infection control inspection records. This initiative is documented in the published minutes of its August 26, 2026 meeting, under Item 6(a), “Discussion of Legacy Inspection Address Data Cleanup and Compliance Review Project.” In separate discussions with Board representatives, Compliance Alliance has been advised that the intention is to inspect established offices as well as newly opened or purchased practices, with consistent oversight across ALL Nevada dental practices. The published minutes document the records review; they do not announce a timetable for inspecting every office.
The Board’s published August 26, 2026 minutes (posted October 7, 2026) state that the project will compare historical inspection records with practice addresses reported during licensing and renewal, identify locations without documented inspections, share historical inspection information, and allow offices to provide proof of prior inspections. The Board emphasized record accuracy, education, and voluntary compliance. View the official NSBDE minutes, Item 6(a), page 8.
When should a practice contact the Board or request an inspection?
Certain changes already carry notification or initial inspection responsibilities. Practices should clearly distinguish an address-reporting obligation from an obligation to request an infection-control inspection.
New office or new ownership: NAC 631.1785 addresses request requirements for an initial infection-control inspection within 30 days after a dentist becomes the owner of a dental office or facility where treatment will be performed.
Purchase of an existing practice: A change in who owns a treatment facility may trigger the initial inspection requirement even if an inspection occurred under a previous owner.
Relocation: NAC 631.150 requires written notice of a practice address change within 30 days. A new treatment location should also be reviewed for any applicable inspection requirements.
Ownership percentage changes: A transfer of 51% or more has been discussed as a potential trigger, but that percentage has not been independently confirmed in the current regulation. If partners are added, depart, or change their interests, including changes below 51%, contact the NSBDE to confirm reporting and inspection obligations before assuming no action is needed.
If your office has recently opened, moved, changed hands, or changed its ownership structure, check your records and contact the Board if you are uncertain whether the required notice or inspection request was submitted.
What will an infection-control inspection cover?
The Board publishes their Infection Control Inspection/Audit Compliance Form, revised January 2026. The Board’s inspection criteria include infection-control topics that overlap with workplace safety. An NSBDE inspection, however, is not a comprehensive OSHA inspection. Inspectors will review:
A physical inspection of your facility, operatories, reprocessing, sterilization and storage areas
Written infection-control policies and designated coordinator responsibilities
Staff education, training records, and effective implementation of procedures
Instrument processing, packaging, sterilization, documentation and monitoring
Confirmation of weekly biological indicator (spores) testing and passing results
Documented education and hands-on training for personnel responsible for reprocessing critical and semi-critical instruments, including demonstration of proper technique
Dental unit waterline maintenance, routine testing, and related records
Environmental cleaning, disinfection, PPE, and clinical practices
Bloodborne-pathogen exposure prevention, sharps safety, and related documentation
Separately, an OSHA readiness evaluation should consider applicable workplace requirements, including the bloodborne pathogens standard, exposure-control plans, hazard communication, personal protective equipment use, required training, and employee records. Our complimentary site survey reviews both sets of concerns.
Review the Board’s actual inspection checklist
We encourage every practice to review the most recent NSBDE Infection Control Inspection/Audit Compliance Form (Revision 1/2026). Download the official Board checklist here. Having the checklist is useful. Knowing how to implement the concepts, regulations and where your practice stands before an inspection? Priceless.
Unidentified risks can lead to unpleasant surprises
Even the most conscientious dental practices can have unidentified hazards and compliance gaps hiding in plain sight. Recognizing those risks before they become problems is the key to avoiding unpleasant surprises. Our complimentary, confidential inspection helps uncover potential vulnerabilities and gives your team an opportunity to ask questions and address them before a regulatory inspector comes calling.
